Are Stablecoins and How Do They Work?

If you have encountered crypto, you have probably noticed something unusual: while Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies can change significantly in price, there are digital currencies designed to keep their value more stable.

These are stablecoins.

A stablecoin is a type of virtual currency designed to reduce price volatility by linking its value to a more stable asset, most commonly a fiat currency such as the U.S. dollar.

Why Do Stablecoins Exist?

The main idea is simple.

Bitcoin may be worth a certain amount today and significantly more or less tomorrow.

A stablecoin is designed to remain much more stable relative to its reference asset.

Because of this, stablecoins are used for:

transferring value;

trading on the crypto market;

holding funds between different transactions;

international transfers;

using different blockchain applications.

What Is USDT?

USDT, also known as Tether, is one of the best-known stablecoins.

Its value is designed to track the value of the U.S. dollar.

This means that a user can hold a digital asset denominated in dollars that can be transferred through a blockchain network.

USDT is used on different blockchain networks, which is why it is especially important to check which network is being used for sending and receiving.

Is a Stablecoin Always Worth Exactly 1 Dollar?

You should not assume that a stablecoin is always perfectly equal to 1 USD.

Its market price may temporarily deviate from its target value.

That is why “stable” does not mean “risk-free.”

Its stability depends on how the specific stablecoin is designed and on the assets, mechanisms, and institutions that support its system.

How Do Stablecoins Maintain Their Value?

There are several models.

Some stablecoins use asset reserves that are intended to support the amount of tokens issued.

Others use crypto assets as collateral.

There are also algorithmic models that attempt to maintain the target value through automated mechanisms.

That is why it is not enough to know that something is a “stablecoin.” It is important to check what stands behind the specific stablecoin.

Is a Stablecoin the Same as a Dollar?

No.

USDT is not the same as U.S. dollars held in a bank account.

A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to track the value of a specific asset or currency.

This distinction is especially important to understand before using stablecoins.

Why Do People Use USDT Instead of Holding Bitcoin?

Because they serve different purposes.

Bitcoin is often used as an investment digital asset and as a means of storing and transferring value.

A stablecoin may be practical when a user wants a digital asset with less exposure to price fluctuations.

For example, after selling BTC, a trader may temporarily hold the value in a stablecoin instead of immediately converting the funds into fiat currency.

Do Stablecoins Carry Risk?

Yes.

The most important thing to understand is that stablecoin does not mean risk-free.

There are risks related to:

reserves and how they are managed;

the issuer;

the blockchain network;

the smart contract;

possible deviations from the target value;

the regulatory environment.

That is why it is important to understand the specific stablecoin before using it, rather than relying only on its name.

Stablecoins in Serbia

Under the terminology of the Law on Digital Assets, a stablecoin that meets the criteria for a virtual currency may be treated within the digital asset framework as a type of virtual currency. The law defines a digital asset as a digital record of value that can be bought, sold, exchanged, or transferred and used as a means of exchange or for investment purposes.

For users in Serbia, it is therefore important to distinguish the technological concept of a stablecoin from its specific legal and regulatory treatment.

In Short

Stablecoins are digital assets designed to have a more stable value than most traditional cryptocurrencies.

The best-known examples include USDT and other stablecoins linked to the value of fiat currencies.

They can be useful for trading, transferring, and storing value, but they are not risk-free.

If you want to understand how a stablecoin is actually stored and sent, the next step is to learn about a crypto wallet.

If you have encountered crypto, you have probably noticed something unusual: while Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies can change significantly in price, there are digital currencies designed to keep their value more stable.
