Confirmed transactions are grouped into blocks, and those blocks are linked together in a chain.

That is where the name comes from:

block + chain = blockchain.

Why Is Blockchain Important?

In a traditional system, one institution often maintains the main record. For example, a bank keeps records of how much money you have in your account.

With a public blockchain, the record is distributed across a network of participants. Changes are not simply entered into one central database. Instead, the network applies predefined rules for validating transactions.

Because of this, blockchain can enable the transfer of value and data without relying on a single central database.

What Is a Block?

A block is a set of data that is added to a blockchain.

On a blockchain that records transactions, a block may contain information about multiple transactions. Once a block is confirmed and added to the chain, it becomes part of the network’s history.

Each block is linked to the previous one, creating a chain of records.

Does Blockchain Mean That No One Controls Anything?

Not necessarily. This is a common misconception.

Blockchain networks differ from one another. Some are more decentralized, while others have different participant structures and governance rules.

Bitcoin was designed as a decentralized network, while some blockchain systems have much more concentrated control.

That is why it is not enough to simply say that something is “on the blockchain” — it is important to understand who maintains the network and how decisions are made.

What Is Decentralization?

Decentralization means that control and data processing are not necessarily concentrated in the hands of a single central participant.

In the case of Bitcoin, for example, the network is maintained by a large number of participants around the world.

This is one of the key differences between the Bitcoin network and a traditional system in which a central institution maintains the records.

Is Blockchain the Same as Cryptocurrency?

No.

Blockchain is a technology.

Cryptocurrency is one way in which that technology is used.

Bitcoin uses blockchain to record transactions, but blockchain can also have other applications.

It can be used for smart contracts, tokenization, decentralized applications, and different forms of digital assets.

What Are Smart Contracts?

A smart contract is a program that runs on a blockchain network according to predefined rules.

For example, a certain action can be executed automatically once the conditions defined in the code are met.

Smart contracts are one of the foundations of ecosystems such as Ethereum.

Can Blockchain Be Changed?

Blockchain is often described as “immutable,” but it is more precise to say that changing already confirmed records afterwards is extremely difficult and depends on the specific network and its consensus mechanism.

Not all blockchain systems are the same.

Why Is Blockchain Important for Bitcoin?

Bitcoin has to solve a simple but significant problem:

How can digital value be transferred from one person to another without allowing the same Bitcoin to be spent twice at the same time?

Blockchain and the consensus mechanism allow the network to maintain a shared record of transactions.

That is why understanding blockchain is one of the best ways to understand how Bitcoin works.

Blockchain in Serbia

Blockchain technology itself is not the same thing as the legal status of digital assets.

Serbia’s Law on Digital Assets regulates digital assets, including virtual currencies and digital tokens, as well as services related to them.

In other words, technology and regulation are two different things.

In Short

Blockchain is a distributed system for recording data that allows multiple participants to use a shared record according to predefined rules.

Bitcoin is the best-known example of blockchain technology in use.

Once you understand blockchain, it becomes much easier to understand Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, tokens, and the rest of the crypto ecosystem.

The next question is: what are stablecoins, and why do people use them if the prices of most cryptocurrencies fluctuate so much?

Blockchain is one of the core technologies behind Bitcoin and a large part of today’s crypto ecosystem.
